NJ Surgery Center Hosting Information Session on Proposed PIP Regulations

Journal Square Surgical Center in Jersey City, N.J., is hosting an information session to discuss sweeping new personal injury protection regulations proposed by the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

The proposed regulations would include PIP hospital outpatient department and physician office-based procedures for the first time on a fee schedule that includes ambulatory surgery centers, called the OSF. This proposed fee schedule would utilize the CMS 2011 ASC fee schedule in its entirety, introducing thousands of codes not on the current ASC only fee schedule.

It would not, however, place any fee schedule restrictions on PIP inpatient hospital procedures, save for trauma, and therein lies the problem, according Jeffrey Shanton, chair, Advocacy & Legislative Affairs Committee, for the New Jersey Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers and director of business management at Journal Square Surgical Center.

"It is important for everyone, be they lawyers, physicians or ASC owners, to understand what is going on and the potential impact these regulations may have on their business," Mr. Shanton says. "With this in mind, Journal Square Surgical Center has decided to hold an informative meeting and discussion. Hopefully this will allow everyone to understand exactly what is going on in, and assist them in devising strategies for their own practices."

The meeting will take place Oct. 13 at 6:00 EDT at the Jersey City ASC, which is located on the fifth floor of 550 Newark Ave.

It will be hosted by Mr. Shanton and feature guest speakers James Cinberg, MD, an expert in balance disorders, and N.J. Assemblyman Jason O'Donnell.

JSSC receives accreditation from the AAAHC

Almost 5,000 ambulatory health care organizations across the United States are accredited by AAAHC. Not all ambulatory health care organizations seek accreditation; not all undergoing the on-site survey are granted accreditation.

The survey is consultative and educational, presenting best practices to help and organization improve its care and services. “Going through the process challenged us to find better ways to serve our patients, and it is a constant reminder that our responsibility is to our patients and the quality of care we provide,” said Martocci.

AAAHC accreditation is specifically for organizations that provide diagnostic or medical care on an outpatient basis- where an overnight stay would not be required. Among the types of ambulatory health care organizations that can seek AAAHC are ambulatory and office-based surgery centers, single and multi-specialty group practices, college health centers, dental group practices, community health centers, occupational health centers, and managed care organizations.

This weekend to a fantastic turnout, Journal Square Surgical Center hosted an MUA (Manipulation Under Anesthesia) mastery class, conducted by Dr. Jason Tirado, Chiropractor and creator of The Tirado Method. The Board of Directors of Journal Square Surgical Center (JSSC) has appointed Jeffrey Shanton Director of Business Development. An expert in the operation of Ambulatory Surgery Centers and insurance standards and practices in the industry, Mr. Shanton will develop a strategy for present and future business at JSSC, as well as oversee all medical billing and collection.

Jeffrey Shanton comes to Journal Square Surgical Center with a wealth of experience in the management of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs.) He has lead the charge in policy change with state agencies and insurance companies regarding ASC governance and operation, and played a key role in ASC administration, with a focus in billing, for over ten years. Mr. Shanton currently serves as the chair of the insurance sub-committee of the executive committee of the Surgery Center Coalition (SCC) of NJ, a grassroots organization dedicated to helping ASCs navigate legal problems and issues, as well as further the cause of out of network centers in the state. An expert on billing issues and the Cody Law, Mr. Shanton has met with state officials and addressed the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance on the out of network issue in NJ. A passionate advocate of legislative reform and the particular legal and political issues concerning ASCs, Mr. Shanton has served as a consultant on ASC legal issues to law firms throughout the state of NJ; He is a frequent contributor to Becker’s ASC Review, a journal of practical business, legal and clinical guidance for ambulatory surgical centers.
